Sex
Flesh, blood, dripping honey combs and panting dogs—these pictures don’t exactly turn you on. But they do express a certain familiar feeling. On a recent hike along a gorge in Western New York, Mark and I saw two teenage girls in bikinis splashing each other with water. It was a humid day and the hike was steep. Around the bend of the trail there was a 9-year-old boy with a furrowed brow. He was watching the girls. He’d start to turn away and then get stuck. He wasn’t smiling or trying to be sneaky; he actually looked confused. Mark said to me, “I remember that feeling. You don’t know why you like looking, but you know you like something about what you’re seeing. You don’t even know that it’s the boobs yet.”
Guerrero Gallery is pleased to announce “Sent Upstate” an exhibition showcasing works by Mark Mulroney. In this new body of works, Mulroney explores the themes of sex and death. Through paint and collage, Mulroney’s imagery of naked ladies, frightened men, blood, flowers and comic genitalia seem to communicate ideas associated with just living life without shame or regret. Mulroney puts it best when he says, “We are all going to die and wish we could have gotten laid more but that is no reason to be upset and feel sorry for ourselves.”
