Traditionally and throughout history, nude art has been utilized as a means for celebrating the beauty of the human body through conceptually perfected formal ideals. As art progressed in the 19th and 20th centuries with Baroque and Modernism, artists began breaking away from the idealized form, steering towards a more naturalistic aesthetic by using live models. Today, many artists abandon idealization altogether, depicting humans as individuals by embracing and emphasizing informalities and often times the grotesque realities of nature. With the advancement of new media and approaches to art, many contemporary artists re-conceptualize the very idea of what it means to be nude within the progressive politics of human culture. From installation to photography; painting to performance; small embroideries to large murals, these artists explore the complex perception of “nude” in today’s society.
