Sofie Ramos

Sofie Ramos was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1990 and now lives and works in San Francisco, CA. She graduated with an MFA in Art Practice from UC Berkeley in 2015 and received a BA in Visual Art from Brown University in 2013. She has exhibited recently all over the Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, and randomly in Mechelen, Belgium.

Prioritizing materiality over image and movement over resolution, Sofie creates installations that conflate the three-dimensional arrangement of objects in a space with the two-dimensional composition of a painting by incorporating the existing architecture as well as sculptural constructions and found objects into a total composition in space. But also each shape, surface and object is a painting in itself, so that there are many layers of paintings within paintings. Rather than a single or autonomous entity, a painting becomes the indefinable sum of the group of entities and references that it is made up of, which can continuously be moved around, recombined, manipulated, added, removed. A core concern of the work and process resides in the shifting relationships determined by the juxtaposition of elements rather than in the identity of each or the overall object/space they compose.

Sofie’s artistic process uses decidedly illogical progression to interrogate the perceived stability of what might be logical, where those boundaries can break down, how they reincarnate. The improvisational and inconclusive process of accumulating, arranging, reusing and reworking layers of visual material reveals underlying tensions in the fluidity of formal and psychological oppositions. There’s a kind of compulsion or mania that makes itself apparent in the work’s striking formal qualities—a vibrant and playful façade that can easily tip from agreeable to overwhelming, giving the work a confrontational potency.
