Heavy Soil
Sofie Ramos
Sofie Ramos’s outdoor installation HEAVY SOIL offers a vibrant meditation on the process of upending and the challenge of confronting the large and cumbersome objects/obstacles in our lives. Her characteristically colorful array of home furnishings and personal belongings appear piled or stacked up against a fence, as if someone were trying to salvage their scattered worldly possessions to rebuild after a major upheaval, like your subconscious might recover pieces of the past to reimagine a memory through a new emotional lens.
Ramos is a full-time artist based in LA & SF and is best known for her large-scale sculptural installations of vibrantly painted and precariously placed household forms and textures that imagine and bring to life other worlds inside/alongside/underneath our own and offer alternative existences for abandoned or forgotten objects. Her paintings/wall objects are smaller fragments of similar found materials and, like the installation work, aim to obscure and parody the relationship between Fine Art and everyday objects and investigate political and psychological issues through physical form/juxtaposition.
